Before launching the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® League, I founded and successfully grew my own law firm business.
At the time, I had no significant legal experience, no mentors, and no family legacy of lawyers.
Let’s just say I had my fair share of naysayers at the time.
Plus, I was working with…
- Only $5,000 in start-up capital to barely cover rent, furniture, equipment and software/membership fees.
- $80,000 in student loan debt.
- No backup plan.
I did, however, have the appetite and tenacity to go for it plus a strong conviction about what I wanted no matter the obstacle.
As my practice grew, I hired an assistant, invited a classmate from law school to join my team, moved to a fancier office, added hundreds of clients/matters, hired more team including my first associate, and drove revenue up and up!
There was ONE problem (or several to be honest)…

This translated to overworked, overwhelmed, exhausted and more than a little dissatisfied with my life.
My health and my marriage started splitting at the seams. After news that my husband’s business (and our finances) were on the brink of crashing, it felt like everything I had worked for was crumbling right in front of me.
I no longer had the energy to deal. I walked away…from it ALL.
I knew in my heart I was more likely to drop dead from cardiac arrest than sustain the pace I had created for myself.
I had tried to be everything to everyone for too long.
THEN MY LIFE CHANGED.
Before building any new businesses, I built trust with myself first.
I agreed to do the inner work.
My husband and I both committed to healing our marriage.
We started taking our health seriously; working out and eating well.
I envisioned what I wanted beyond the money: more spaciousness in my life, flexibility around when and where I worked, the freedom to take significant time off without the business falling apart, a team of independent and motivated self-starters, and a business I looked forward to building.
Then…I launched a new, virtual law firm business!

Interestingly, women rarely question money spent on their family, especially their children.
But, when it feels like it’s for “us” we often hesitate and overthink and check in with others EVEN IF we know in our own guts that the investment will more than pay off. AND when generational wealth and more time together will benefit our children way much more in the long run.
Why do so many women feel compelled to justify their investments in themselves or their businesses?
It can come down to this:
People celebrate men and women differently. This then impacts us when it comes to making big moves in business. As women…
- People cheer for you when you get married.
- They’ll congratulate you when you have kids.
- They may even compliment you on choosing such a “prestigious” career path as a lawyer.
But, the public RARELY loudly celebrates women for starting their own businesses.
Quite the opposite.
Instead, they warn you of all the possible ways you’ll fail. They’ll insist you’ve chosen a risky path.
They’re less impressed with the idea of women generating wealth.
AND they may even call you selfish or greedy for wanting more for yourself and your one beautiful life.
So, yeah, making an investment in your business might feel a little…subversive. Like you need to justify it as though it’s a big purchase.
But you’re not buying a car that’s going to drop in worth the second you pull it out of the lot. (And, let’s be honest, men get celebrated for buying cars too!)
